Site furnishings can be thought of as “furniture for your site or garden”. As a category, it includes such items as benches, trash receptacles, ash urns, bollards, tables, chairs, etc. These site elements allow people to interact with a space in a variety of ways. A design which provides benches (or tables/chairs) encourages people to stop and sit, and can begin to attract people to animate the space.
Site furnishings may be manufactured products, custom installations, or a combination of the two (a manufactured element mounted to a custom base, for example). There are many manufacturers producing a wide variety of site furnishings in a whole range of styles, from traditional to modern, ornamental to minimalist. The site designer is tasked with choosing the right sort of amenities to fit visually, direct the use of the site in accordance with the client’s wishes, and to be sure the design serves users as intended.
Custom detailing can add a unique and distinctive flair to a particular design. Judicious use is recommended, however; for most types of site furnishings, it is usually more costly than standard off-the-shelf products, and can carry a longer lead time to produce because of its limited production run. Many manufacturers have developed a range of popular alternates and sub-options within their lines of products to allow for some ability to customize components in a more cost effective manner.
